Today I came across a terrific 2006 article in Harper's by Kevin Baker about the persistent myth that great failures by great powers can only result from perfidy from within, i.e., from a "stab in the back". From Germany in World War I to the US in Korea and Vietnam, the legend has lived on, and we're going to see it again when a Democratic president finally takes out troops out of Iraq.

Lez Zep 2
Christine and I saw Lez Zeppelin in Boulder last Thursday. I saw them seven months ago and was blown away. It's not Christine's kind of music, but she's a good sport, and she got a kick out of the energy of the band and the crowd. Go see them if you ever have a chance.
